Brand Tracking

Measure the same brand questions period after period and see at a glance which ones are moving.

Brand tracking for small businesses: measure perception instead of guessing

A brand doesn't live in your logo or in your office. It lives in the heads of your customers, and there's only one way to see it there: ask the same questions regularly and compare the answers. That is brand tracking.

The good news: perceptions move before sales move. A tracker is your early-warning system, long before a trend shows up in the revenue curve.

What to track

Up to ten things is plenty; more dilutes the focus:

  • Positioning attributes: what you want to be known for ("fast to set up", "personal support")
  • Category entry points: the table stakes of your category ("good value for money")
  • Negatives to watch: perceptions that could hurt you ("hard to get support")

Measure the same items every period, ideally yearly, and set aside about 5% of your marketing budget for it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure without a market research budget?

A short survey is enough to start: to newsletter subscribers, to customers after a project, or through an affordable panel. What matters isn't a perfect sample but using the same method at both points in time.

How often should I remeasure?

Once a year is the usual rhythm: early enough to feed next year's planning, late enough to reflect the current year.
